Architecture of City Center DC, Low Carbon by Foster and Partners

“CityCenter DC by the international study, foster and partners located in the heart of Washington, DC, the ten-acre master plan for low carbon footprint is one of the largest urban development’s underway in the United States. The site, which was previously closed by a single large volume, the main border of the axis of the city of New York Avenue, overlooking the White House. The development breaks the large plot of land – formerly occupied by a convention center – in other smaller pedestrians blocks occupied by hotels, offices, apartments, restaurants and a wide range retail stores.
His roots in the urban distinctive identity of the city, the design incorporates and expands the original 18 th century alleys between the blocks. Designed to be a human scale, in contrast to the imposing scale of the surrounding blocks, the volume of step below ten floors at the perimeter of the site to frame a central plaza, where the streets and roads converge. a new public park, designed by Kathryn Gustafson, on the northwest corner of the site further extends the public and offers a multitude of spaces for social interaction and personal reflection.
The high density, mixed-use scheme will create a low carbon, fourth pedestrian bridge overlooking the historic district, a predominantly residential in the north and commercial office developments in the south. David Summerfield, director of design at Foster + Partners, said: “CityCenter DC is one of the most important urban developments in the United States today and we are honored to be the designers of a master plan for low carbon footprint for a place so prominent. Our design has evolved through detailed studies of the climate of the city and the streets – The new construction is integrated with its historical context and create a unique place to live and work, as well as an important civic space and services. “
